'Jinnah-Jaswant', Bhai-Bhai?

“Jinnah-Jaswant, Bhai Bhai” seems to be new slogan since Jaswant Singh sings a new song on Mohamed Ali Jinnah, Father of Pakistan eulogizing him in new political biography, ‘Jinnah - India, Partition, Independence’.

Jaswant Singh, who has served seven terms in Parliament and held charge of six ministries in BJP-led governments, including finance, external affairs and defence, senior leader of BJP and from the royal family of Rajasthan. His son Manvendra Singh failed candidate at the Lok Sabha elections in Rajasthan and Jaswant won the battle himself elected from Darjeeling.

Disillusioned Jaswant Singh is of rough shod from especially from his party key group of cadres especially Hindus such RSS, Bajrang Dal and Shive Sena for his vitriolic remarks of Nehru and the first Home Minister of India, Sardar Vallabhai Patel.

On Tuesday 18, the Shiv Sena supremo, in his party organ “SAMNA” has come down heavily as “I fail to understand why BJP leaders, who claim to be patriots and pro-Hindutva, slip on the issue of Jinnah. There appears to be a rush among BJP leaders to offer flowers to and praise Barrister Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

Some years ago, BJP leader L K Advani had offered flowers on Jinnah mausoleum and had lauded the founder of Pakistan as a historic icon. Advani had praised Jinnah who caused the murders of millions of innocent people in undivided India. How can such a person become an icon of Indian history? And now a veteran leader of BJP Jaswant Singh is holding Pandit Nehru instead of Jinnah responsible for the partition of India.”

Rajnath Singh, the party leader retorted “division of India which led to a lot of dislocation and destabilization of millions of people”.

“It is too well known we cannot wish away this painful part of our history,” he said.

He also took objection to ridiculing of Sardar Vallabhai Patel by Jaswant Singh, saying the first Home Minister played a historic role in unification and consolidation of India amidst serious threats to its unity and integrity.

“The entire country remains indebted and proud of all the profound vision, courage and leadership of Patel,”

Advani, senior leader of BJP earned similar political and the of public ire when he praised Jinnah a great secular nationalist.

Jaswant Singh’s postulation are very clear to state that on “Nehru as one of the principal architects of India’s partition” To fan the fuel of Hindu enthusiasts, Jaswant further writes “that Jinnah did not win Pakistan, rather Nehru and Patel conceded Pakistan to Jinnah with help of the British”

Why after 62 years of partition, Jaswant Singh has seen a new dawn with an ideology deliberately writing book on Muhammadli Jinnah, at a time when the party has met a nose crash debacle in the last parliamentary election and; the BJP is scanning for all sorts of virus scrutinizing state wise what exactly went wrong for the debacle, sitting for BJP is organizing a three day “Chinthan Baithak”-Brainstorming Session on Wednesday to the “basic beliefs” on “Partition” in which 25 main stalwarts of BJP are participating and Jaswant Singh also is one of the invitees.

Jaswant Singh would be an obscurantist,if Nehru and Vallabhi Patel are described as responsible for partitionion and if Jaswant Singh wrongly pictures the bloodbath and loss of lives on both side were on behest of Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi in the partion conflicts. It would be a vitriolic and cataclysmal conclusion to the true history of independent India.

Jawaharlal Nehru and Iron-handed Vallabhai Patel are very important architects of India and were instrumental and influential in integrating the splintered territories into a unified India. Mahatma Gandhi observed fasting unto death risking his precious life to avert the blood bath on both side.

Let younger generation be well versed on partition and Independent India. Vande Matram, Jai Hind.

We, Indians, or say the residents of the Indian sub-continent, are hyper-sensitive. After 1947, Dr. Sir Iqbal, one of the two original philosophers (the other one was Acharya Narendra Dev)was denied recognition in India on account of his support to the creation of Pakistan. The same is being meted out to Jaswant Singh. He has become a whipping boy. Why are we bent upon denying the right of expression, enshrined in the Constitution of India? We may agree or disagree with someone but we cannot deny the right to expression. Instead of initiating an honest debate on Jinnah we are indulging in mud-slinging on Jaswant Singh and the BJP.

RSS and BJP affiliated historians have distorted the history already. This time Jaswant Singh is telling a big lie so loudly that any one can be about his understanding about the history. But poor Jaswant Singh will not find the support of RSS even.

Anil,

Your observation on the history of partion India is appreciable. Please read the details in the following URLs:

Puneet,

I do not know why Jaswant Singh ventured such an act, indeed. Did he foget what chastisement Advani received earlier on eulogising Jinnah as secular personality!

Shafee Sahib,

The question is of perception. After independence, the Minority community, Muslims, were given regular doses by the Congress and the Left parties that their future were secured only under their stewardship. In a way they succeeded in keeping 12 crore Muslim population at ransom. They never allowed the Muslims to be a part of the mainstream. Region is much bigger factor than religion. A Punjabi Hindi is more close to a Punjabi Muslim than a Hindu from Uttar Pradesh. Nothing wrong in it.

I have gone through the article by Inder Malhotra in the issue of August 19, 2009 in The Asian Age. I am not going to discuss the historical aspects of the unfortunate partition here. But we should read Jaswant Singh first before bestoing the martyrdom on him. His first book sold well because L.N. Mittal’s company purchased them in bulk to distribute them free to journalists and others.

Anil,

In secular governments, Muslims have have been enjoying posts like Presidents,Chief Justice,Bharath Ratna Awards,Governors et cetera.

In contrary to all these, the bigots have been showing hostile, and violent activities on minorities especially on dalits both Christians and Muslims.

These we have been witnessing in all Governments so far ruled.

The post Godhra event is

Shafee,

|The post Godhra event is orchestrated one second worst after post Independent era.

What about the Meerut riots, the Bhagalpur riots, the Nellie massacre etc.?

Why only Godhra? Because, BJP was in power? The Congress has the worst record when it comes to communal riots.

But no PM, no Chief of Army Staff, no position of real executive authority. The Muslims who have held high positions were merely of symbolic nature.

Shafee,

I don’t think that Jaswant Singh was wrong or wrote anything that was factually incorrect. He just happened to be politically incorrect by writing what he wrote in India.

I believe he is one of the very few people in Indian politics today who knows what he says, and a man of very strong character.

The BJP will be much poorer without him. It was great to see Arun Shourie backing him up while castigating the top BJP leadership especially the joker Rajnath Singh.
